Leaks, Covers & Mixtapes: A Brief Guide to JoJo’s Unofficial Releases

Fresh from touring in Japan and Okinawa with Armed Forces Entertainment, Joanna “JoJo” Levesque recently announced that she is ready to get back on the road for a new tour with a distinct twist. Hold on to your wigs…

Those well-accustomed to the R&B/pop singer’s journey will know that after crashing onto the scene at the age of 13 in 2004 with arguably her most popular song “Leave (Get Out)” and subsequently releasing two successful albums JoJo (2004) and The High Road (2006) on Blackground Records, Levesque hit what we shall now call a blip in the form of label troubles, which for seven years prevented her from releasing a third studio album. During that time, having tired relentlessly to put together several versions of a full LP with hopes of starting the next phase in her music career, she stayed proactive and released mixtapes to tide her loyal fans over, performed various covers… and unfortunately had a lot of the material that she was working on leaked.

Back to the present day. A few weeks ago, JoJo cutely asked her fans via Twitter what some of their favourite leaked songs of hers were. Needless to say, the response was overwhelming, with over a thousand replies from people itching to share their love for all the tracks that she worked so hard on, and for which, at the time, she sadly could not be recompensed. Now, thankfully, she can: in the form of a tour, where she will perform those very same songs. Funny how life and the universe works, isn’t it?

Behold: Leaks, Covers & Mixtapes Tour.

(I’d like to give a shout out to the conjuring of the title of said tour, which reminds me of the film Sex, Lies, and Videotape.)

I almost forgot to tell you the good news. JoJo finally did manage to release her third studio album Mad Love., 10 years later in 2016. The album, released on Atlantic Records, reached #6 on the Billboard 200 chart and featured the songs “F*** Apologies” (ft. Wiz Khalifa), “FAB” (ft. Remy Ma), “Mad Love”, and “I Can Only” (ft. Alessia Cara). It was followed up with a worldwide and mostly sell-out tour.

In 2017, Levesque and Atlantic parted ways, as she then started her own imprint label with Interscope, called Clover Music.

For these special and more intimate acoustic shows in 2018, the Leaks, Covers & Mixtapes Tour will be visiting 15 US cities (fingers crossed for some dates in other countries – *cough* the UK *cough*) from the end of May through to the end of June. Most of them are already sold out!

Expect there to be quite a few mash-ups at these shows, since there’s so much unreleased material, and we all know how much JoJo wants to please her fans. That much is evident in the fact that she’s even doing such an amazingly absurd and unprecedented thing, certainly within the music industry.

“What gives me life is knowing that you dig the music and connect with my commitment to never giving up and not allowing anyone to tell me how my story goes. There’s so much more I want to share with you. For now, I’m SO EXCITED to present this crazy idea: Leaks. Covers. & Mixtapes Tour. A lil different… but its MY journey,” the singer wrote on an Instagram post.

In another post she added, “You have no idea how excited I am to sing these songs live for the very first time… This tour is especially for everyone who rocked with me when my hands were tied and my voice was silenced.” She appreciates how much #TeamJoJo held her down while she was going through her label issues (unlike those FABs, “with you fake *ss b*tches…”)

Anyway, in case you missed what was going on between roughly 2007-2014, and had the misfortune of being unconscious of some of JoJo’s best “unofficial” work, here’s a taste of what you may have missed and what you can look forward to on the upcoming tour.
